Marceleine Cumberland Obituary

Marceleine Ann Hoye Cumberland, lovingly known by all as Marcie, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024, after 12 years fighting cancer. With her were her husband of 55 years, Jim Cumberland, three of her four sons, two grandsons, a daughter-in-law, friends and love. She was 77 years old.

Marcie spent her life as an educator. For many years, she was a schoolteacher, concentrating on English, Social Studies, and Art at the Elementary School level. She also taught people as a Mother, Scout Leader, Storyteller, and Crafter. For over fifty years, each day was dedicated to teaching, sharing, and celebrating others. Her gifts of creativity and humor made her lessons more like games than learning, and she taught students of all ages with grace and kindness.

Born in Taunton, Massachusetts on March 3, 1947, the eldest of five children, Marcie nurtured her younger siblings through the mid-sixties before heading off to college where she met the love of her life, James John Cumberland. They courted for a year before Jim popped the question. They married on August 3, 1968, and sped off in his 1964 Volkswagen Bug for their honeymoon.

As their kids came along, they moved from Adams, Massachusetts to El Paso Texas, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Ferndale, Washington, and Sonora, California. In 2004, she and Jim decide to hit the road in their RV and left the Rat Race behind to explore adventures in the hospitality business throughout the Northern, Southwestern, and Midwestern United states, where Marcie continued teaching both as a storyteller, and as an “Old-Time” teacher at a schoolhouse in Colombia, California.

They decided to settle in the Benson, Arizona area in 2012 to concentrate on fighting cancer, living life, and loving family; a goal they achieved daily for the next 12 years.

She is survived by Jim, of J-6 Arizona, her sons James, Noel and Ray of Tucson, Arizona, and her son Eric, of Ware Shoals North Carolina. She also leaves three daughters-in-law, two grandsons in Arizona, two granddaughters in Washington, and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her father, Charles J. Hoye of Hobbs, New Mexico, and two brothers, Denis P. Hoye of San Jose, California, and Charles Terrence “Terry” Hoye, of Hobbs, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her mother, Loretta Ducharme Hoye, a sister, Lori Hoye-Logan and a brother, Joseph Hoye.

She will have a memorial service and celebration of the Holy Rosary from 2 P.M. To 4 P.M. on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Richardson's Remembrance Center, 725 E. 4th Street, Benson AZ.
